Title: The Private Journal of Captain G.F. Lyon, of H.M.S. Hecla, During the Recent Voyage of Discovery Under Captain Parry [&] A Brief Narrative of an Unsuccessful Attempt to Reach Repulse Bay, Through Sir Thomas Rowe's "Welcome," in His Majesty's Ship Griper, in the Year MDCCCXXIV. Author: Lyon, G[eorge] F[rancis] Place: London Publisher: John Murray Date: 1825 Description: 2 volumes bound in 1. xi, [1], 468; xvi, 198, [1] pp. With 2 folding maps, 7 engraved plates, text illustrations. In his "Private Journal," Lyon records the events of the second Parry expedition (1821-23) in the Hecla, which he commanded. In 1824, Lyon penetrated midway between Wager Inlet and Repulse Bay before he was driven back by bad weather: in his "Brief Narrative," he describes the difficulties encountered, and provides observations on the Eskimos of the Southampton Islands. John Barrow described the objectives of the voyage as "having been [conducted] to complete the land survey of the eastern portion of the north coast of North America, from the western shore of Melville Peninsula, as far as to Cape Turn-Again, where Captain Franklin's late journey terminated." He continued, in true-to-form Barrow, "[the voyage] furnishes a beautiful and striking example of obedience to orders " [AB 10530 and 10531] Lot Amendments Condition: Offsetting from plates, scattered foxing affecting some plates and maps, one map with a very small tear at stubb, a nice solid copy; very good.
