(22½x37¾"). Moll's famous map of North America with California as an island, the so-called "Cod Fish Map," since there is a pictorial engraving beneath the cartouche of "A View of a Stage & also of ye manner of Fishing for, Curing & Drying Cod at New Found Land..." The pictorial cartouche above depicts American Indians and Eskimos, and the armorial shield of Lord Sommers. Beneath the Cod Fish engraving is a block of 10 inset charts of harbors, including Boston, New York, Port Royal, Havana, Acapulco, etc. Regarding the island of California, McLaughlin remarks: "California on second Sanson model, with indented northern coast, and with Mozeemleck Country and Straits of Annian to north. At northern end of California is stated: New Albion is laid down according to the observations maed [sic] by Sr. Francis Drake 1578." He also notes that the map "Reduces size of French Louisiana, labels Labrador New Britain, and presses other British claims over land previously held by France." Issued in The World Described.
