Author: ** Place: Oahu Publisher: Na Na Misionari I Pai Date: 1838; 1837 Description: Three volumes in one. [iv], 924; 887; 520 pp. (8vo) 7¼x4½, approx. 4½" thick, early calf with later morocco rebacking. First complete Bible printed in Hawaii. The very rare first complete Bible published in the Hawaiian Islands, printed entirely by the Mission Press. Some portions had been published as early as 1829; the N.T. was completed in 1832; the O.T. not until February 1839. Some copies of the N.T. are dated 1835; some lack the date at the end of the O.T. A team of eight men, working directly from the Hebrew and the Greek, completed the translation, utilizing the most intelligent of the natives to arrive at a correct interpretation of the more difficult passages. Lot Amendments Condition: Board edges rubbed, rear cover nearly detached, the massive page block split entirely in 2 pieces near the center; worming throughout, inoffensive in most cases but with some more extensive worming near the center resulting in some loss of text, two leaves torn and detached; scarce and worthy of restoration.
