First Edition in Book Form. Reprinting of articles by Bidwell which appeared in the Century Magazine for November and December, 1890 and February 1891. Kurutz notes that "the vast majority of the text is devoted to the famed overland trek and early days in California before the American conquest. The pioneer provided interesting information on pre-Marshall gold discoveries." Bidwell served as a congressman during Reconstruction.
