Title: Bleak House Author: Dickens, Charles Place: London Publisher: Bradbury and Evans Date: [1852]-1853 Description: 2 volumes, bound from the original 20/19 parts, with wrappers and advertisements included. Illustrated with 40 plates by H.K. Browne ("Phiz"), including the frontispiece and additional title-page. There are 10 "dark plates". 8¾x5½, later half gilt-ruled green levant morocco & marbled boards, gilt spine panels, raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. First Edition. First edition, bound up in original parts with the original wrappers and most (but not all) of the advertisements, slips and inserts as called for by Hatton & Cleaver. Includes "a rather scarce item", "The Village Pastor" booklet in part 15. The following variations from Hatton & Cleaver occur: Part. I - lacks ads for W. Mott (12 pp.) and Norton's Camomile Pills (4 pp.); Part II - lacks Bleak House Advertiser at front and all ads at rear; Part V - lacks slip for Crochet Cotton; Part VI - lacks slip for Crochet Cotton; Part XIV - lacks ad for W. & A.K. Johnston (2 pp.); Part XVII - lacks slips for Grace Aguilar's Works (8 pp.); Part XVII - lacks slip "Largest Newspaper in Europe"; Part XVIII - lacks all ads including the Bleak House Advertiser; Part XIX/XX - Lacks "Newcomes" slip to precede Adertiser, and lacks slip for Works of Samuel Warren. Hatton & Cleaver p. 275. Lot Amendments Condition: A touch of extremity wear to bindings, spines a bit sunned; darkening to some plates, front wrapper of Part XI torn and repaired, top corner of front wrapper of Part XVII torn off, the wrappers of Part XVIII are facsimiles, wrappers of Part XIX/XX are chipped; still in quite nice condition, handsomely bound.
