Date: 1706 Description: [12], 210 pp. With copper-engraved added pictorial title-page; large folding copper-engraved map; & 30 copper-engraved plates, 8 of them folding. (4to) 23.8x18.2 cm (9¼x7¼"), period mottled calf, spine tooled in gilt, raised bands, morocco lettering piece, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers. all edges gilt. First Edition. Evert Ysbrants Ides (1657–1708/9), a Dane also known as Adam Brand, traveller, negotiant, served Tsar Peter I between 1691 and 1695, when he was sent to Peking to pay homage to the Emperor. Cox notes that "This was no easy journey in those days." Among the engravings is a depiction of Tsangyang Gyatso, the sixth Dalai Lama (1683-1706, called the "Immortal God"), and a fold-out of the Great Wall of China. Cox I, p.330-31. Ownership signature on front blank dated 1912. Lot Amendments Condition: Some wear to cover edges and extremities, joints cracked; some soiling and minor foxing within; very good.
