Lot of 3 CDVs capturing General John A. Rawlins at different stages of his military and political career. Includes a vignetted portrait bust of a neatly bearded Rawlins in a dark suit and bow tie, with "Brig. Genl. Rawlins" inscribed below and imprint of Barr & Young at bottom left corner. Backmark reads, "Barr & Young, / Army Photographers, / Vicksburg, Mississippi." Rawlins also appears seated in uniform with shoulder straps indicative of his promotion to the rank of brigadier general in an image credited to Frank Edsall, Goshen, NY. Rawlins's first wife, Emily Smith, hailed from Goshen, and their children continued to live there with her family after her death from tuberculosis in 1861. Finally, Rawlins is pictured with a long beard and dark suit in a vignetted portrait credited on recto and verso to Mathew Brady, Washington, D.C., likely taken after he assumed the position of Secretary of War in 1869. Condition: Overall toning and surface soil, with areas of discoloration. Barr & Young CDV with greater areas of soiling and surface abrasions, with creasing to lower left corner. Edsall CDV with some tearing to image at upper left corner, and all with contemporary pencil notations on verso.
