R.) together with Bronze Memorial Plaque (Joseph Topping) extremely fine (4) £100-120 Footnote Sergeant Joseph Topping, 11th Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment, was killed in action on 23 March 1918, aged 30. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Topping, of St Helens, Lancashire, and is buried in Ham British Cemetery, at Muille-Villette, on the Somme. On this day the Germans, in their advance towards Amiens, crossed the Somme at Ham, and the town remained in their hands until the following September. Sold with his identity disc, forwarding letter for 1914-15 Star, post card photograph, two memorial cards and various Imperial War Graves Commission correspondence. Sergeant Joseph Topping was the father of William Topping who won the George Medal in the Second World War (see Lot 1268).
