Three rare reel-to-reel master transfer studio recordings of Charlie Parker from sessions produced by Norman Granz 1949-1952.
As many of Norman Granz’ studio recording sessions pre-dated the wide use of magnetic tape for mastering, sessions were recorded direct-to-disc on acetates. When magnetic tape superseded direct-to-disc as the dominant recording format, Granz transferred his masters to tape, and the original lacquers were shelved. Horrified at the request to dispose of the superfluous session tapes and acetates in the late 1960s, Granz’ then assistant Eric Miller requested to keep them, to which Granz replied ‘Sure, it’ll give you something to do in your retirement.'
The first on ¼-inch Scotch Brand tape, in an original audiotape box with part-typewritten, part-handwritten label ‘Charlie Parker’, for the client ‘Jazz at the Philharmonic, Norman Granz’, listing an alternate take and master recording of Mama Inez (from a session on 23 January 1952 in New York) and one master, two alternate takes and two false starts of Mambo – Okiedoke (from a session with Cubop bandleader Machito “The Mambo King” and His Afro-Cubans in January 1949 in New York); the second on ¼-inch Scotch Brand tape, in original box with typewritten label fragment ‘Charlie Parker’, for the client ‘JATP’, the recording comprising two alternate takes, two false starts and a master of Blues (Fast), and an alternate take of I’m In The Mood For Love, from a session with the Charlie Parker Quartet circa April 1950 in New York; both masters transferred on 24 January 1952 by Tape Legend Radio Recorders, Hollywood; the third on ¼-inch audiotape, the reel labelled ‘Bird’ in red chinagraph pencil, in an original Scotch Brand box with part-typewritten, part-handwritten label ‘BIRD’, for the client ‘Jazz at the Philharmonic’, listing an alternate take of My Little Suede Shoes (from a Latin session on 12 March 1951 in New York), and master takes of La Cucuracha, La Paloma, and Mama Inez (from a Latin session on 23 January 1952), transferred on 6 May 1953 by Tape Legend, housed in a custom clothbound box; all three accompanied by Eric Miller’s handwritten notes which additionally detail the master numbers and personnel.
