THREE BLUE AND WHITE SNUFF BOTTLES18th/19th century
The first, of hexagonal baluster form, painted with a continuous scene of scholars engaging in leisurely pursuits in an interior setting, stylised shou character on the base, coral stopper and ivory spoon, 4cm (1 1/2in) high; the second, larger but similarly shaped as a lobed melon decorated on each lobe with further melons on leafy tendrils, collector's label on the base, tourmaline stopper, Japanese wood box and cover 6cm (2 1/4in) high; the third, of tall cylindrical shape decorated with scholars and attendants admiring scrolls, playing liubo and gazing at the landscape, Qianlong six-character mark, stopper and ivory spoon, 7.5cm (3in) high. Compare the larger blue and white melon-shaped snuff bottle, to a related blue and white snuff bottle similarly decorated with melons and tendrils, 19th century, which was sold at Christie's New York, 15 March 2017, lot 390. Another melon-shaped blue and white snuff bottle, 18th/19th century, was sold at Christie's New York, 19 March 2009, lot 269. Compare the blue and white snuff bottle with scholars, to a similar snuff bottle, 19th century, which was sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 25 May 2014, lot 1074.
