(Small repaired tear to upper blank margin of plates XXI to XXVIII.) Contemporary red morocco-backed boards, spine gilt with blue/green morocco lettering-piece. Provenance : early pencilled note on title 'Gt. Brit. Challenger office'. FIRST EDITION of the complete bird section from the series of thirty-two volumes which made up the 'Zoology' section of the scientific reports of the 'Challenger' voyage. The section was overseen by Philip Lutley Sclater, but is made up from various articles by Arthur, Marquis of Tweedale, Sclater, Dr. Otto Finsch, Tommaso Salvadori, William Alexander Forbes, Osbert Salvin Howard Saunders and A.H.
