Beschreibung:

Thomasinus de Ferraria
Sermones quadragesimales. Cologne: Johann Koelhoff the elder, 1474
Chancery folio (289 x 200mm.), 236 leaves, a-z10 [et]6, double column, 40 lines, Gothic type, initials in blue or red, red initial-strokes and underlining, early manuscript foliation in roman numerals, early manuscript index on 5 leaves bound at front, manuscript title on initial blank leaf, a few early manuscript annotations, contemporary blind-ruled pigskin over square wooden boards, metal corner-pieces and two clasps, with holes in boards from metal bosses at centre and towards corners, holes from chaining staple at head of lower cover, pink alum-tawed index tabs, modern paper label on upper cover with calligraphic lettering, vellum manuscript pastedowns (from different manuscripts, the lower pastedown one sheet of a bifolium), yellow edges, a few small scrapes to binding, small crack in upper joint, lower flyleaf creased
A TALL CRISP COPY WITH DECKLE EDGES IN A CONTEMPORARY BINDING. It presumably belonged to a monastic chained library early in its history, but the provenance has not survived.
The author of these Lenten sermons was probably the Dominican Tommaso dai Liuti of Ferrara, who was part of the court of Borso d'Este in the 1460s, and for whom he wrote a treatise on good government.
The manuscript pastedown at the front of the volume is from a later 13th century German manuscript, handsomely written but seemingly unfinished because of the lack of rubrication, containing parts of chapters 9-12 of Bede, De natura rerum. The lower pastedown, also later 13th century and German, contains Questiones by canon lawyers.
