FIRST EDITION, 2 parts in one volume, folio (356 x 222 mm.), issue with the additional pages *129-*138 in part one and the errata slip on p. 80 in part 2), titles printed in red and black, dedication leaf, 18 folding maps and plans, contemporary tree calf, spine gilt with red morocco label, map of "Cap-Francois in the Isle of St. Domingo" browned with extremities frayed and 2 large closed tears, some spotting and browning throughout, joints starting, with upper hinge reinforced, extremities rubbed
"A monumental geographical work important equally for its text as well as its maps" (Streeter). The first part describes Canada and Louisiana, and France's troubles with the indigenous peoples. The second part provides a close look at the island territories of the French West Indies, including Martinique, Hispanola, Guadaloupe and other smaller islands.
PROVENANCE:armorial bookplate of Earl of Cowper; acquired by Firle Place, Sussex, presumably after the marriage of 6th Viscount Gage (1895-1982) to Imogen Grenfell, and after the death of Imogen's mother, Lady Ettie Desborough (1867-1952)
