Beschreibung:

Thomas Hale (fl. c. 1750) Eden: or, a compleat body of gardening ... compiled and digested from the papers of the late celebrated Mr. Hale ... [by Sir John Hill (1716?-1775)]. London: T. Osborne, S. Crowder & Co., and H. Woodgate, [1756]-1757. 2° (412 x 252mm). Engraved title by Charles Grignon after Samuel Wale and 60 plates by Hill, Boyce, Cole, Alton, Edwards and Darly after van Huysum, Edwards and others. (Light crease marks to some plates, some light browning and spotting of text.) Contemporary half calf and marbled boards (rubbed, joints weak, extremities worn). Provenance : Charles Doyne (bookplate). FIRST EDITION OF THIS WEEKLY GUIDE TO GARDENING, issued in 60 parts between August 1756 and November 1757. Each number opens with a selection of species likely to enhance the flower garden, while advice is given on the care of flower-garden, nursery, fruit-garden and kitchen-garden for the week ahead. The work followed Hale's Compleat Body of Husbandry issued in 61 numbers between June 1755 and August 1756; both publications being edited and perhaps extensively written by Sir John Hill (the second edition of Eden published in 1773 gave Hill's name as the author and omitted any reference to Hale and his papers). Hill is remembered for having introduced the Linnean system of classification into England. Although he drew on a variety of published sources for the illustrations to Eden , the results are effective, the 60 plates all showing six or seven different plants, 'realististically portrayed and artistically arranged on the page.' Dunthorne 129; Great Flower Books p. 59; Henrey III, 776; Hunt 559; Nissen BBI 880; Tomasi Oak Spring Flora p. 197.
