THOMAS DANIELL (1749-1840) AND WILLIAM DANIELL (1769-1837) Hindoo Temples at Bindrabund on the River Jumna Ruins at the Ancient City of Gour Formerly on the Banks of the River Ganges An Ancient Hindoo Temple, in the Fort of Rotas, Bahar 3 hand-coloured aquatints, drawn and engraved by Thomas Daniell on thick Whatman paper (617 x 475mm to 647 x 488mm), dated 1795 [the first two] and 1796, from part I of Thomas and William Daniell's Oriental Scenery , London: 1795-1797 (inner margins lightly worn, not affecting image, first and second plates with shallow creases, very light soiling outside platemark). Abbey Travel 420 nos. 3, 5, 12. The Daniells reached the sacred city of Brindaban 10 February 1789. Here Krishna was said to have spent a happy childhood, entrusted to the care of the herdsman Nanda. Thomas Daniell was so impressed by these 'beautiful and elegant Pagodas' that on his return to England he submitted an oil version as his Diploma picture for the Royal Academy, where it still hangs.
