Besser Date: 1809 Description: xi, [1], 227, [1], 20 pp. With 1 engraved plate. (4to) 28.5x23.5 cm (11¼x9¼"), period pastepaper boards. First Edition. Important astronomical work by the noted mathematician, containing "an analysis of the problems arising in the determination of the motions of the planets and comets from a limited number of observational data" (PMM 257 note). Norman 879 notes that "In this work Gauss systematically developed the method of orbit calculation from three observations he had devised in 1801 to locate the planetoid Ceres, the earliest discovered of the 'asteroids,' which had been spotted and lost by G. Piazzi in January 1801." See Dibner Heralds of Science 114n. Lot Amendments Condition: Some rubbing to boards, wear at spine ends and corners; some very minor spotting and soiling to contents; very good or better. Item number: 286240
