Beschreibung:

THEODOOR VAN THULDEN ('s-Hertogenbosch 1606-1669 's-Hertogenbosch) The Blinding of Polyphemus. Pen and brown ink and wash with white gouache heightening on cream laid paper mounted on a sheet of laid paper. 295x375 mm; 11 3/4x14 3/4 inches. Small coat-of-arms watermark. Provenance: Private collection, California. This drawing is based on a painting by Francesco Primaticcio (1503-1570) which was engraved by Thulden, in reverse of the drawing. A native of 's-Hertogenbosch, in 1626 van Thulden became a master in the Guild of St. Luke of Antwerp. Between 1631 and 1633 or 1634, he stayed in Paris where he studied the works of the Mannerist masters of the School of Fontainebleau. This study reinforced Thulden's already strong Mannerist style tendencies. This is reflected in a series of 58 engravings depicting Odysseus' journeys, which he produced around this time. These prints were made after the paintings of Primaticcio and Niccolo dell'Abbate (1512-1571) in the Palace of Fontainebleau in Paris.
