Title: The Works of Washington Irving Author: Irving, Washington Place: New York Publisher: G.P. Putnam & Co. Date: 1856 Description: 15 volumes. (12mo) 18.5x11.5 cm (7¼x4½"), period full dark brown morocco tooled in gilt on covers and spines, raised bands, marbled endpapers, gilt inner dentelles, all edges gilt. Attractive set of the works of the great man of letters, including the historically significant "Astoria or, Anecdotes of an Enterprise beyond the Rocky Mountains," with a folding map; "The Adventures of Captain Bonneville, U.S.A. in the Rocky Mountains and the Far West," also with a folding map; "The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus," with two folding maps; and more. With ink inscription in Volume I, "To Mrs. J.M. Page, D. Ogden Mills." The presenter would be Darius Ogden Mills (1825-1910), a prominent American banker and philanthropist who, for a time, was California's wealthiest citizen. Most of the volumes with ink ownership signature of Mary Page on the front flyleaf. Lot Amendments Condition: Some rubbing to joints and extremities; light foxing within; very good.
