Title: The Works of Shakespeare Author: Shakespeare, William Place: London Publisher: J. Tonson, and the rest of the Proprietors Date: 1635 [but 1730s] Description: 8 volumes. Each play with separate title page, pagination and register. First volume prefaced with a life of Shakespeare by Rowe. 42 engraved plates. (12mo) 16.5x10 cm. (6½x4"), uniformly bound in late 18th century full calf, spines gilt, red and black morocco lettering pieces. Volume 7 without the common title page and apparently assembled at an early date (not before 1786) with copies of Antony & Cleopatra (Tonson, 1758), King Lear (Bathurst, 1786), Othello (Bathurst, 1784) and Cymbeline (Bathurst, 1784). An early duodecimo printing of Pope's edition of the bard's plays. ESTC T54702 (except volume 7). Lot Amendments Condition: Spines sunned, extremities rubbed and worn, a few joints cracking; very good. Item number: 212508
