Pop Art – Mixed media with coloured pencil and pencil as well as collage on strong wove paper fully mounted on canvas. Signed and dated. Spot-mounted on backing and framed under glass to a high standard. - The work partially irregularly trimmed at the edges, probably inherent to the work. With tiny pinholes and superficial paper abrasion at the margins as a trace of the former mounting. With smudge marks and finger marks due to the technique. On the verso the canvas slightly studio-marked. At all in good condition. Large-format drawing with expressive hatchings. - Drawings have always had an overriding importance for Larry Rivers which can be traced back to his teacher Hans Hofmann When Rivers was trained by Hofmann at the Hans Hofmann School in New York from 1947 to 1948, the teacher emphasised drawing as the basis of all artistic creation. In accordance with this importance, Larry Rivers' work impressively demonstrates his pictorial language for which he combined non-representational and non-narrative art with narrative and objective abstraction as well as the manner of commercial advertisements and pop-cultural references. Based on his personal style, Rivers was also given the title "Grandfather of Pop Art" in art history.
