Rare advertising piece for Isaiah Taber, using a C.E. Watkins photograph of Yosemite taken in 1865-66. Taber acquired most of Watkins' Pacific Coast Views negatives in 1875-76, amidst economic difficulties for Watkins and some skulduggery by his financial partner J.J. Cook. Taber, best known until that time as a portrait photographer, published Watkins' view under his own name and negative numbers, and, as the present piece shows, was not adverse to using Watkins' photographs to advertise his own establishment. The text on the large label reads: "The Best and Most Complete Collection of Views of the Pacific Coast Scenery. Taber, 8 Montgomery Street, Opposite Grand and Palace Hotels, San Francisco." The classic view of the Yosemite Valley, with Vernal and Nevada Falls, is rich in tone, with just minor fading at the top portion. Lot Amendments Condition: Dark dampstains in the margins, very light intruding in two small spots in right of image, a few spots in sky portion, 1" indentation with vertical crack in emulsion in rocky outcrop in lower right, else very good, a rare photographic advertising piece.
