Philadelphia: Mathew Carey, 1804. [4], 37, [1], 19 pp, 8vo (210 x 125 mm). 22 engraved plates containing 38 strip maps, each finely engraved by Francis Shallus. Later straight-grain morocco gilt by Stikeman. Condition : minor wear on the raised bands and corners. Provenance : C. L. F. Robinson (bookplate). The text begins with a geographical and historical portrait of Philadelphia, which includes descriptions of the principal buildings in the city, including the Philosophical Society, the Philadelphia Library, the University, Pennsylvania Hospital, various banks, churches, societies, etc. The guide proceeds outside Philadelphia and describes the towns and villages along the roads to both New York and Washington, with descriptions of each of those cities. Following the text are detailed road or strip maps showing the route from Philadelphia. “One of the earliest guides” (Howes). This copy is the second edition; the first issued two years prior. Although the maps are identical to those in the first, the preceding text has been updated, with new information concerning the Philadelphia Bank, Peale’s Museum, the Schuylkill Permanent Bridge and other landmarks incorporated, constructed or relocated since the first.
