Title: The Tales of Peter Parley about America Author: [Goodrich, Samuel G.] Place: Boston Publisher: S.G. Goodrich Date: 1829 Description: 160 pp. Engraved frontispiece and additional engraved title page; woodcut illustrations throughout. 14x11 cm (5½x4¼") original leather-backed boards. Second Edition, stated. A cornerstone of American Children's literature, first published by Goodrich in 1827. This second Goodrich edition is equally as rare as the first, if not more so. Of the 1827 Goodrich printing OCLC locates 9 copies and there are several copies currently in the marketplace. Of the present edition, 10 copies are located by OCLC (none west of the Mississippi River). OCLC also identifies 1827 and 1828 editions published by Carter, Hendee and Co. of Boston with only 2 copies of each of those editions located. The original owner's name, Francis H. Whitman, in ink on the title page, dated June 1829. Blanck, Peter Parley to Penrod 1; Grolier American 100 #35 (both for first edition). Lot Amendments Condition: Light wear to head of spine, corners worn, tear to rear free endpaper; foxing; very good. Item number: 253622
