THE SPANISH FORGER. Female Saint in a boat with a courtly couple and two boatmen. Large historiated initial 'O' on an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT LEAF ON VELLUM 193 x 195mm. A small boat being rowed in a wavy lake between rocks and trees, a very large gothic castle behind, the saint and the couple standing in the boat. Within a blue initial on gold ground with foliate extensions. On verso part of five very large lines from a 15th-century Italian antiphoner. Framed and glazed. An unusually attractive scene by the mysterious Spanish Forger, who was active in creating so-called medieval manuscripts and miniatures appealing to collectors at the beginning of this century. A somewhat similar scene is described in W. Voelkle, The Spanish Forger (N.Y.: 1978) L61, fig.244.
