The Shaving of Shagpat. An Arabian Entertainment Author: Meredith, George Place London Publisher: Chapman and Hall Date: 1856 Description: viii, 384 pp. (8vo) 18.8x11.8 cm (7½x4¾"), original blind-stamped crimson cloth, gilt lettering. First Edition, Carter, Binding Variant B. Meredith's first novel, a series of Oriental tales told in the manner of Eastern storytellers. Friend and colleague George Eliot enthusiastically reviewed Shagpat, calling it a "work of genius." Such reviews, however, did not help sales and the majority of the first edition was remaindered; this accounts for what Carter describes as the "endless" binding variants of this book. Lot Amendments Condition: Skillfully recased; corners and tips of the cloth repaired; very good copy. Lots sold without reserve are sold “as Is” and are not returnable under any circumstances.
