The Second Opium War The Blockade of Canton Incoming Mail 1857 (14 Oct.) entire letter from New York to Augustine Heard & Co. in Canton "via Marseilles & Overland Mail" and "per 'Arabia'", the letter dated 1857 (22 July), with "78" and "24" rate marks, two different London transit c.d.s. (12.8) and the Hong Kong c.d.s. (14.10) on the flap. It is thought that this letter was carried by British gun boat to the new British Postal Agency at Whampoa.
