The Property of a Family
Herman SaftlevenRotterdam 1609 - 1685 UtrechtAn italianate rocky landscape with a horseman and a child on a path, a herdsman with his flock beyond
signed with monogram and dated lower left: HS / 1649oil on oak panelunframed: 42.2 x 67.8 cm.; 16⅝ x 26¾ in.framed: 57 x 83 cm.; 22½ x 32⅝ in.Condition reportThe panel is uncradled and bears beveling on all margins. It is possible that the panel has been planed slightly at the back. There appears to be no sign of old splits or cracks. The paint surface is stable and the entire surface is covered in a thin layer of varnish which appears to be clear. There are examples of beautifully preserved brushwork found throughout the painting and is particularly noticeable in the trees, the plants in their minute details and textures, in the figures and in the sky and clouds. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals a vertical repaired scratch in the centre of the panel which runs down the entire vertical length of the panel. This has been excellently conserved and restored. There are also other minor retouchings visible in the sky, the clouds, and in the pockets of the grain of the wood, particularly noticeable in the lower right corner. Overall, the painting presents very well and in a good condition.
