Title: The Plague in India, 1896, 1897 Author: Nathan, Robert Place: Simla Publisher: Printed at the Government Central Printing Office Date: 1898 Description: 4 volumes. With 27 folding maps, plans & charts, many in color, in Vol. 4, the atlas. (8vo) 25x17 cm (9¾x6¾"), red cloth lettered in gilt. Detailed record and analysis of the devastating epidemic of bubonic plague that hit India in 1896 and was to deadly effects for the next thirty years, costing some 12.5 million lines. The first volume provides the main account, the second and third are appendices, and the fourth is the atlas with color maps graphically demonstrating the extent of the scourge, tables recording the effects. etc. Includes bibliographical references and index. Formerly in the Library of the College of Surgeons in Ireland on title pages, backs of the maps and charts, etc. Quite scarce in the trade - there are no records of sale at auction dating back to 1975, according to American Book Prices Current, and no current retail listings online. Also included in the lot is: Risley, H.H. The Tribes and Castes of Bengal: Anthropometric Data. 2 volumes. Calcutta: Printed at the Bengal Secretariat Press, 1891. (Covers soiled, stained, spines darkened, library stamps as above). Lot Amendments Condition: Some normal wear and soiling to covers, spines darkened; offset to endpapers; very good.
