Extremely rare first edition of Lawrence's translation of the Odyssey, published in the same year as the first English edition of 530 copies (priority not known). This American edition was published in a run of 34 copies; of which, according to O'Brien, only 11 were bound in full morocco. The book was designed and commissioned by Bruce Rogers Rogers had been inspired by his reading of Seven Pillars of Wisdom to persuade Lawrence to undertake this new translation. Lawrence began his work in 1928. This copy has the book's original receipt from David Magee in San Francisco to Dr. Eugene Kilgore in 1938. Dr. Kilgore was the leading heart disease expert at UCSF. The book remained in the Bay Area with Kilgore’s family until 2003. Also laid in is a letterpress advertisement from Maggs Bros. for original Lawrence drawings, dated in manuscript, 1938 (this leaf toned at edge). O'Brien A148.
