The eleventh text volume in Curtis's monumental work on the Indians of North America, which came to number twenty text volumes, each published with an accompanying portfolio of large photogravure plates (not present in this lot). The North American Indian took over twenty years to produce. Although 500 sets were produced, only about half of those were bound. The present volume covers the Nootka and the Haida peoples of the Pacific Northwest. Chapters cover warfare, sociology, ritual and myth. Institutional plate and marks from the Brooklyn Public Library with serrated stamp and rubber stamp on title page. Lot Amendments Condition: Some rubbing and scuffs to morocco with a bit of fraying at spine ends, scratch to cloth on front cover; hints of toning along top edges (not affecting photogravure images), silk bookmark detached and laid in; near fine internally.
