Spotswood, et. al. Date: 1792 Description: xii, 557, [1], xv-xvi pp. (12mo) full leather, gilt-lettered morocco spine label. First American Edition. A lovely example of an early American-printed cookbook, books that usually have survived in poor condition. Among the 38 chapters, some are on Wines, Cordial Waters, and Brewing. First published in London in 1788. Lowenstein, American Cookery Books, 14. Bitting, Gastronomic Bibliography, p.60, citing this Philadelphia edition as the main edition, and noting the other editions (including the two later Boston and Philadelphia editions of 1798). Lot Amendments Condition: Wear to extremities, corners bumped; contemporary name, Mary Smith in ink on front free endpaper and title page; lacks pp. xiii-xiv, else complete; foxed with some offsetting; else very good.
