Beschreibung:

REISS, Wilhelm (1838-1908) and STUEBEL, Moritz Alphonse (1835-1904). The Necropolis of Ancon in Peru. Translated by A.H. Keane. Berlin: A. Asher, 1880-1887. First edition of the archaeological report of one of the most important sites of ancient Peru. Ancon, with its vast Necropolis, has been continuously inhabited for over 10,000 years. The first tombs were uncovered in 1870; this report documents the subsequent excavation conducted by German geologists Reiss and Stuebel. Its publication was funded by the Museum of Ethnology in Berlin in exchange for the transfer of the excavated artefacts to the museum. Issued simultaneously in English and German, it presents the findings of the excavation in vivid chromolithographs of mummy bundles, textiles, quipu notes, and other grave goods. Palau 256818. Three volumes, folio portfolios (509 x 375mm). Half-titles, 142 lithographs mostly in color (edges chipped, some toning, title of 3rd volume a little dustsoiled). Loose in modern portfolios with original wrapper mounted on covers; all in three custom boxes. Please note this lot is the property of a private individual.
