Title: The Metallic Wealth of the United States, Described and Compared with That of Other Countries. Author: Whitney, J[osiah] D[wight] Place: Philadelphia Publisher: Lippincott, Grambo & Co. Date: 1854 Description: xxxii, 510 pp. (8vo) 9½x6, original purplish blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. First Edition. Inscribed on title page to "Samuel Goddard, Esq. With the compliments of the Author." Two geological off-prints by Whitney, extracted from other works, laid in, one bearing a similar inscription. "This work was a milestone in the literature of ore deposits, and remained a standard text for two decades. One of the first systematic texts in the field, it stimulated serious research on mineral ores and helped to establish mining geology as a scientific discipline." (DSB) Quite scarce. Lot Amendments Condition: Spine a bit faded, old stain to rear cover, corners rubbed; internally near fine; overall very good. Item number: 180066
