Title: The Life of Napoleon Buonaparte, Emperor of the French. With a Preliminary View of the French Revolution Author: [Scott, Sir Walter] Place: Edinburgh Publisher: Longman, Rees, et al Date: 1827 Description: 9 volumes. (8vo) half morocco with marbled boards (though most morocco corners are missing). Errata slips tipped in Volumes 1-3, 5-8. First Edition. Included are two steel-engraved portraits (from another publication?) laid into Volume 1 and 2; one of the author and one of Napoleon. Scott presents a dispassionate, unpartisan view of Napoleon, paying tribute to his military genius and administrative skill and underlining his legacy to France in the form of a national system of education, greatly improved communications, and the Code Napoléon. Refusing to paint him as the bloodthirsty despot presented by many a fellow Tory, Scott notes his mild and humane temperament and genuine love of his country. Lot Amendments Condition: Morocco corners mostly missing, head of spine on Volume 1 detaching, edge wear, boards rubbed; name written in ink on front free endpapers and title pages; foxing, some pages are loose; else very good. Item number: 196984
