[iii]-xvi, [2], 412; [iii]-vi, [2], 468 pp. With folding engraved map with hand-coloring; woodcuts in the text. (8vo) 22x13.5 cm (8¾x5¼"), period polished tan calf ruled in gilt, spines tooled in gilt, raised bands, morocco lettering pieces, marbled endpapers & edges; bound by Bickers. First Edition. Burton's account of his penetration into the interior of Africa, with John Hanning Speke as his second in command, in search of the source of the Nile River. The journey was to become as famous for the acrimonious relationship between the two explorers as for any geographical knowledge gained, although the latter was significant. This copy rebound without the twelve "chromoxylograph" color plates; the half-titles are also not present. There were two issues of the first edition, which in the present case cannot be determined since the copy is rebound. Penzer p.65. Lot Amendments Condition: Some rubbing to spine and other shelf wear; very good, quite clean internally. Item number: 286061a
