Die Ballade ‚The Lady of Shalott‘ regte im viktorianischen Zeitalter zahlreiche Künstler zu bildlichen Darstellungen an. Viele Gemälde und Illustrationen dieses Themas sind bekannt, so u.a. von Edward Burne-Jones John William Waterhouse Arthur Hughes William Maw Egley John Byam Liston Shaw, Howard Pyle ebenso eine Buchillustration von Gabriel Dante Rossetti zur finalen Szene der Ballade. Das vorliegende fein ausgearbeitete Gemälde mit der Darstellung der Lady of Shalott zeigt wohl die im Originaltext ‚I am Half-Sick of Shadows, said the Lady of Shalott‘ genannte Szene, kurz bevor Lancelot im Spiegel erscheint und sie in den Tod lockt. Dargestellt ist eine weibliche Figur im präraffaelitischen Frauentypus der femme fragile, für die möglicherweise Alexa Wilding als Modell in Fragen kommen könnte. Alexa Wilding wurde von Dante Gabriel Rossetti mehrfach portraitiert. So zeigt eine Darstellung von ihr als Veronica Veronese Übereinstimmungen sowohl in der Physiognomie wie auch in der Haltung und Bildkomposition. English: The Lady of Shalott. The present finely crafted painting depicting the Lady of Shalott probably shows the scene mentioned in the original text 'I am Half-Sick of Shadows, said the Lady of Shalott' shortly before Lancelot appears in the mirror and lures her to her death. Depicted is a female figure in the Pre-Raphaelite type of woman, the femme fragile, for whom Alexa Wilding could possibly be a model. Alexa Wilding has been portrayed several times by Dante Gabriel Rossetti A depiction of her as Veronica Veronese shows similarities in physiognomy as well as in posture and composition.
