Title: The Innocents Abroad Author: Twain, Mark Place: Hartford Publisher: American Pub. Co. Date: 1869 Description: First edition, first issue with all the correct points. Original black cloth, gilt. Expertly recased, preserving the original spine. Mark Twain's second book and first bestseller, an account of the first American pleasure cruise on an ocean-going vessel, an excursion to the Holy Land, by a boat-load of seventy-five wealthy awe-struck "pilgrims" who antics supplied TWain with endless opportunities for satire and comedy. Besides Twain, the pilgrims were also accompanied by a photographer, William James who produced a set of stereoviews documenting the trip. This copy is accompanied by one of James's original stereoviews picturing Mount Olivet, the tomb of the Virgin, and the Garden of Gethsemane. A few scuffs, but a very good copy in the rare binding with all edges gilt (which cost subscribers an extra 50 cents). Donated by MacDonnell Rare Books, Austin, TX. Lot Amendments Condition: A few scuffs. Item number: 254952
