The History of the Royal Society of London, for the Improving of Natural Knowledge Author: Sprat, Thomas Place Published: London Publisher: Printed for Rob. Scot, Ri. Chiswell, [et al.] Date Published: 1702 Description: [16], 438 pp. Several engraved plates, some folding. (4to) 20x14.5 cm (8x4¾"), modern mottled calf in period style, raised bands, spine lettered in gilt. Second edition. Sprat's account of the Royal Society has been described as apologetic in nature; he was a preacher rather than a scientist, and his authorship was meant to lend credibility to the Royal Society in a day where its reputation for secular, materialistic members and writings made the public and more conservative members among the elite somewhat suspicious of its work. Condition: Light shelfwear, occasional spotting and soiling to leaves; one folding plate sticking out and worn at exposed edge; still attractive, near fine. Item#: 359430 Headline: Sprat's defense of the Royal Society 2nd ed.
