THE GREAT EXHIBITION-- Dickinsons' Comprehensive Pictures of the Great Exhibition of 1851, from the originals painted for H.R.H. Prince Albert, by Messrs. Nash, Haghe, and Roberts R.A. London: Dickinson Brothers, 1854. 2 volumes bound in one, 2° (570 x 423mm). 55 chromolithographic plates, including the two frontispieces, by Dickinson Brothers after Joseph Nash Louis Haghe and David Roberts finished by hand and heightened with gum arabic. Title in red and black with woodcut initials. (Occasional light spotting and browning, principally affecting the margins of plates and text leaves, light offsetting onto title and one plate, 4 plates cropped with loss of imprint, another with loss of title.) Contemporary green half roan, gilt spine compartments with elaborate floral tools, gilt edges (small tear causing slight loss to cloth of upper cover, corners and spine rubbed and scuffed). A FINE SERIES OF PLATES depicting the range and variety of the Great Exhibition. With the exception of 'The Inauguration', and the four general interior and exterior views, all the plates are accompanied by explanatory text leaves. Volume I illustrates the displays of the foreign exhibitors, volume II those of British and Colonial exhibitors, and specific classes of objects -- for example, furniture, Sheffield hardware, machinery, and minerals.
