Inscribed on the reverse This secretary and combination sideboard…was the property of William Paca, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence who became Governor of Maryland in 1782 and who died in 1799. In 1845 the last surviving relative having died it was purchased by a Virginia gentleman who held it in his family until 1878 when it was sold with the effects of the Estate at Fairfax Court House ad purchased by a gentleman in Washington, D.C. from whom it was purchased in February 1879 and shipped to F. Bosher of Colchester, New Hampshire. It was purchased from him by John B. Varick on Nov. 18, 1896 and given to his (frau) in honor of McKinley’s election.
