Title: The Faith of Men and Other Stories Author: London, Jack Place: New York Publisher: Macmillan & Co. Date: 1904 Description: [vi], 286 + [2] ad pp. Blue pictorial cloth, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. In custom slate-blue morocco and cloth clamshell case. First Edition. Presentation copy inscribed by Jack London and with original signed photograph of Jack and Charmian London mounted to front pastedown: “Dear Southwell: - This, too, is a Snark desk copy. Hope you’ll like the yarns a little bit – for the sake of, your friend, Jack London. Sydney, Australia, Mar. 8/09.” The Londons spent several months (Nov. ’08 – April, ’09) in Sydney, where Jack sought medical relief from the several ailments contracted during the abortive Snark expedition. A newly-hired captain together with Martin Johnson brought the Snark from the Solomon Islands to Sydney to join Jack and Charmian on March 3, ’08 ,when Londons removed their personal possessions and other valuables – including this copy of “The Faith of Men.” Coincidentally, Charmian noted in her diary for March 8, 1909 “Martin (Johnson) is planning to write a book ‘Through the South Seas with Jack London.’ Haw! Haw!” Martin Johnson’s so-titled first book was published in 1913. The photograph is a studio portrait of Jack and Charmian with a painted “Hawaiian” backdrop and is autographed by both Jack and Charmian. Lot Amendments Condition: Rubbing to joints and extremities, a few spots to covers, light foxing to fore-edges, else very good. Item number: 186338
