This beautifully presented Formula 5000 Lola-Chevrolet offers virtually the ultimate in 1970s Formula 1-style road racing performance - and appearance - at a mere fraction of the purchase, maintenance and running costs of contemporary (2-litres-smaller) Formula 1 machinery… In period this Lola T400 was the last such development car to be built by Lola Cars Ltd for the Formula 5000 series. Frank Gardner described it at the time as being "…probably the most sophisticated Formula 5000 to be built so far – it’s not complicated, but it is sophisticated…". In fact, ‘HU-2’ as offered here featured, as-new, freshly-designed fabricated uprights, inboard brakes, rocker-type suspension and further refined bodywork. During 1975 the T400s emerged as the front-running car in Formula 5000 competition, and Belgian Teddy Pilette won the European Championship title in such a car. This particular T400 was run by Australian owner/driver Max Stewart and Glen Abbey in the 1975 Tasman Championship series of races in New Zealand and Australia. Max Stewart was a larger than life character who drove hard and fast, and after being forced to retire from both the Levin and Pukekohe (New Zealand Grand Prix) rounds of the Championship in New Zealand he then finished 7th in this car at Oran Park, before entering it for the great Australian driver Kevin Bartlett at Surfers Paradise, in Queensland. There ‘Kev’ finished 5th. Offered here with full FIA Historic Vehicle Identity Form documentation, it was restored by the previous owner in 1997 using an original aluminium monocoque and the 5-litre Lucas fuel-injected Chevrolet V8 engine was professionally rebuilt. Featuring dry-sump lubrication of course with Weaver three-stage oil pump, the transaxle is a Hewland DG400 five-speed with limited-slip differential. Lockheed disc brakes are mounted inboard at the rear and outboard up front. Purchased by the vendor from Bonhams’ Goodwood Festival of Speed sale in 2002 who advises the car was "completely rebuilt" over the Winter of 2002/3 for him to race - only a change of plans results in its now being offered for sale in "as new" condition.
