The English Pilot. The Second Part. Describing the Sea Coasts... Rivers and Ports in the whole Northern Navigation. London: Thomas Page and William Mount, 1731. The Spencer copy of the second part of the English Pilot covering the North sea, the Northern Navigation (to Nova Zembla) and the Baltic. First published in 1671 in 26 charts, the Northern Navigation was issued initially as the first book of the English Pilot, later updated and enlarged by Mount and Page, and made into the second book. The present lot contains 31 charts, including 'A New and Exact Map of the part of the Coast of Norway ... printed for Benja. Crowe' which is not mentioned in the relevant bibliographies; Tooley's Dictionary entry for Crowe only credits him with this one map, and dates it 1740. Reissued through to the mid-18th century, this atlas played an important part in the rise of English sea power in European waters, providing English sea captains with reasonably accurate charts. See NMM III(1) 424 (1740 ed.); Shirley BL M.M-2a and b (both 1716 eds); Tooley Maps and Map-makers p.61. Folio (470 x 300mm). Letterpress title with woodcut royal arms, 31 engraved sea charts, 28 double-page and 3 on 2 sheets joined and folding, woodcut text illustrations (charts 4 and 6 remargined with plate borders in facsimile, chart 6 with light finger-soiling in sea area, charts 9 and 19 weakly impressed in some areas, charts 12 and 20 with some light browning, slightly heavier browning to a few text leaves). Contemporary panelled sheep (rebacked to style, heavily rubbed and scraped). Provenance : library booklabel of George John Spencer, 2nd Earl Spencer (1758-1834).
