This was the Shah's first marriage, and the wedding was a political one intended to strengthen the ties between the Iranian and Egyptian courts, attracting controversy in the process as it united a Sunni royal Princess with a Shi'a royal Crown Prince. The couple had a daughter together, Princess Shahnaz Pahlavi, before they became estranged and eventually divorced in 1948.
