THE DORMITION OF THE MOTHER OF GOD GREEK, 17TH CENTURY, SIGNED BY THEODORE POULAKIS The composition organised around the bier that carries the lifeless body of the Mother of God, her head resting on a green, tasselled cushion, the incident with the sacrilegious priest taking place in the foreground, at the sides Peter and Paul incensing, the bier surrounded by mourners, two elderly bishops displaying scrolls inscribed with exaltations to the Mother of God, at the back Christ accompanied by four angels and a seraph, holding the soul of his Mother in the form of a swaddled infant against a blue mandorla with golden rays, a second glory of orange light above including an image of the Mother of God in prayer ascending towards the open heavens, amidst angels on clouds, two of them bearing garlands with Marian hymns, at the far right Thomas floating on a cloud, holding the girdle of the Mother of God, the lower section against a structure, a town in grisaille depicted beyond the extended wall, the background applied with gold leaf, painted with vibrant, complimentary colours, accentuated by white brushstrokes, signed at the lower left corner in Greek majuscule: THE HAND OF THEODOROS POULAKIS, in a later frame 21 5/8 x 26 in.
