THE DESK OF HENRY CHADWICK Henry Chadwick (1824-1908) The Dean of Baseball writers invented sportwriting as an occupation. From the 1850's until his death in 1908 he dominated the field of baseball journalism. He devised the system of scorekeeping still in use today and he invented the newspaper box score. He contributed to the Dewitt Guides, The New York Clipper, Beadles Guides, The Sporting News, and Sporting Life. He edited Spalding's Offical Baseball Guide and his own publication The Ball Players Chronicle . This desk once resided in his home in Brooklyn, New York (a photograph of which is included with this lot.) It has been passed down through his family who consigned it to this sale in 1939. Chadwick was the first writer elected to Baseball's Hall of Fame in 1939. The desk is of Stickley Mission design and was manufactured of oak by Ludwig Bauman. The original hardware has been replaced but retained. An important association piece of one of baseball's most significant contributors and pioneers. Offered with one of Chadwick's books which belonged to him, and two signatures, one Henry Chadwick on the loose fly leaf from a book and the other, also on loose book pages which says in his hand ÿMrs. Henry Chadwick from her affectionate and devoted husband, Henry, Feb. 24th, 1853.
