The Collection of Medals to the Cheshire and Manchester Regiments, Rifle Brigade and Royal Green Jackets formed by the late David Boniface Three: Quarter-Master & Captain J. Walter, Rifle Brigade Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 3 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, South Africa 1902 (8372 Q.M. Serjt., Rifle Brigade); Coronation 1911, privately engraved, ‘J. Walter, Qr. Mr., Rifle Brigade’; Army L.S. & G.C., E.VII.R. (8372 Sjt. Mjr., Rif. Brig.), generally very fine or better (3) £250-300 Footnote James Walter ‘enlisted in the Rifle Brigade on 17 August 1886 and for many years was on the Permanent Staff of the 5th Battalion, being Sergeant-Major from 1903 until 1906, when he was promoted Quarter-Master. He finally retired on medical grounds as a Captain in 1918’ (The Rifle Brigade Chronicle, 1936 refers). Having won entitlement to the above described Queen’s South Africa Medal & clasps for service in the 5th Battalion - the Queen’s Own Royal Tower Hamlets Militia - Walter was stationed at Minister in the U.K. throughout the Great War and advanced to Q.M. and Captain in February 1916. He died in October 1951.
