Title: The Collected Works of Scott Joplin - inscribed Author: Lawrence, Vera Brodsky, editor Place: [New York] Publisher: New York Public Library Date: 1971 Description: 2 volumes. With sheet music and facsimiles of original illustrated covers. (4to) original gilt decorated brown cloth with gilt lettered spine. First Edition. Scarce first edition set of both volumes, inscribed by the editor on the front free endpaper to Hubert Saal, longtime music and dance critic for Newsweek: "To Hubert Saal - with warm good wishes of Vera Lawrence, February, 1972." This is the definitive record of Scott Joplin's songs, with an excellent introductory essay, "Scott Joplin: Black-American Classicist," by Rudi Blesch. Between 1895 and 1917, Joplin composed 53 pieces for piano and ten songs. All are reproduced here along with their delightful sheet music covers. The music consists of rags, marches, waltzes and a tango. Forty four are original, and some were written in collaboration with other composers. Also included are three appendices; "Rollography of Joplin Works," "Discography of 78 rpm Records of Joplin Works," and "Selective Discography of 33 1/3 rpm Records of Scott Joplin." Lot Amendments Condition: Light wear to cloth with some rubbing to extremities; interiors fine. Item number: 277504a
