THE ANNUNCIATION, large historiated initial 'A' on a leaf from the Temporal, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ANTIPHONAL ON VELLUM
THE ANNUNCIATION, large historiated initial 'A' on a leaf from the Temporal, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ANTIPHONAL ON VELLUM [Tournai, 1400-1410] 500 x 340mm (leaf); 140 x 133mm (initial). In the left margin a nun kneels in prayer, holding a scroll with 'Ad dominum pro me pia virgo precamina prome' (a common enough sentiment, although the exact sequence is only found in a Latin poem by a certain Godefridus [de Thenis?] in a 14th-century codex at Lübeck). The initial opens the responsory for the First Sunday in Advent, 'Aspiciens a longe' (some rubbing and loss of pigment to the faces of the Angel Gabriel and of the Virgin, right margin slightly shaved).
