London: Bradbury and Evans, January 1847-July 1848. 20 parts in 19, 8 o (225 x 145 mm). 40 engraved plates and wood-engraved illustrations in the text after the author (some occasional spotting and minor marginal browning). Original pictorial printed yellow wrappers (a few repairs to spines, some minor soiling); red morocco folding case. THE FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL MONTHLY PARTS, with the following issue points: page one has rustic lettering; the "Marquis of Steyne" woodcut is present on p.336; p.453 reads "Mr. Pitt" for "Sir Pitt." All of the inserted advertisements noted in Van Duzer are present, including the slips for John Forster's Life of Oliver Goldsmith and Thackeray's Pendennnis in parts 14 and 19/20 respectively. Some parts retain the original tissue between the two plates. Van Duzer 230.
